Welcome to Year 1! 1s are taught by Mrs Sweet, along with the TAs Miss Jennings and Mrs Cozens.

Paddington is enjoying his travels with the children and has been to a wonderful range of different places. Thank you for your efforts with helping the children to record their weekends with him.

In the first half of the Spring Term, the children will learn about famous explorers from the past such as Sir Ernest Shackleton, who explored in Antarctica. In English lessons, the children will continue to practise correct letter formation and sentence writing. They will write postcards from a boat that goes on an adventure. You can find this animation, called ‘The Little Boat’, on the Literacy Shed website. We would like to invite you in to look at the postcards the children have written on Friday 7th February at 2:45. The children will also do some writing about the explorers they have studied. In Maths, we are focusing on mental addition and subtraction strategies using number bonds to 5 and 10. In Science, the children will learn about different materials and carry out some investigations. PSHE lessons will focus on Goals and Dreams. In RE, the children will learn about ‘Identity and Belonging’ and will be visited by Reverend Pentelow. During Design and Technology lessons, the children will look at different lunchbox designs and decide how they can make their own lunchbox. The children will learn how to log on to the laptops in Computing and will practise using Word to write and design their own text.

In the second half of the Spring Term, the children will learn geographical skills by studying the school grounds. Their English work will continue to focus on handwriting and sentence building and will be based around a popular book. Science lessons will be based on the topic ‘Ourselves’. In Design and Technology, the children will learn about preparing food and will prepare some healthy snacks. Maths lessons will focus on using money, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, telling the time and statistics. Before the second half of the Spring Term, it would really help the children to practise using money and understanding which coins exist. Once they have started to learn to tell the time, it would help them to keep working on this at home as they will need lots of real-life practice so that they do not forget what they have learnt. In PSHE, the children will focus on ‘Healthy Me’ whilst RE lessons will focus on ‘Prayer, Worship and Reflection’.

The children will continue taking part in daily phonics lessons where they will develop their reading and spelling skills. In June, they will complete the statutory Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. This is a list of 40 words that the children can decode using their phonics. Some of the words are real and some are made-up in order to see how well the children can use their phonics. They will sit the check with me and it will take about ten minutes. The children’s phonics lessons and Home Learning tasks will prepare them for the test. Nearer the time, they will bring home some extra resources to practise ready for the check. The best way to help your child prepare is to practise the phonics Home Learning tasks and to spend extra time on any words or sounds that your child finds difficult in their Home Learning.

We have provisionally booked a trip to Waltham Abbey Gardens on Tuesday 12th May.

We will update this page regularly with photos and other information so you can see what we have been up to!
